Is Disney Planning a Big Crypto Push?

Disney has posted a job listing seeking an attorney to push the brand into the Web3 space.

The entertainment giant Disney is seeking a principal legal counsel who specialises in NFTs, the metaverse, blockchain technologies, and decentralised finance in order for the company to expand its scope into Web3.

The new role, posted on Friday, details that the attorney will principally provide “legal advice and support for global NFT products” made in collaboration with Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, as well as Disney Parks, Experience, and Products.

Other responsibilities include “[providing] day-to-day legal advice to Disney legal and business teams on NFT and cryptocurrency related matters and issues,” and “[…] thought leadership and strategic direction on products involving digital currency and blockchain technology.”

The principal counsel posting also indicates Disney’s sensitivity towards escalating regulatory and legal pressures regarding the crypto industry and the NFT space, where the job will specifically focus on “securities law issues” related to “the promotion and sale of NFTs.”

There are hints that Disney may be looking to go beyond NFTs and the metaverse by tapping into digital currencies and decentralised finance. The job description notes that these Web3 projects from Disney are likely to be developed and rolled out “on an accelerated and aggressive timeline.”

The job posting comes after a series of assertive, yet low-key efforts from Disney to involve more Web3 technologies, including NFTs and the metaverse.

This February, Disney CEO Bob Chapek revealed that the company has been already working on metaverse experiences, and has described the metaverse as “the next great storytelling frontier.”

Under the Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution (DMED) division, veteran executive Mike White has been appointed Disney’s Senior Vice President of Next Generation Storytelling and Consumer Experiences. White had joined Disney since 2011, and has climbed up the corporate ladder by taking leadership roles in technology teams at Disney Parks Experiences and Products, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media and Disney Interactive.

In these efforts, Chapek aims for the Disney brand to pursue the “strategic pillars of Storytelling Excellence, Innovation, and Audience Focus” for bringing new forms of storytelling and entertainment to the world.

Disney has been on a mission of onboarding a number of NFT specialists under positions such as Director, Sales & Digital Marketing; Culture Trend Marketing Manager; Manager, Business Development; and ESPN Business Development & Innovation. In November 2021, Disney had collaborated with digital collectibles platform Veve to launch an NFT collection with 4,333 editions.

However, further details and development on Disney’s exact aspirations towards Web3 remain a mystery.
